Think of a 4 barrel carburetor as 4 small throttle bodies....
You have to restrict each small hole to accomplish making the total area for air to flow to be less.
The surface area of a carb manifold is HUGE. Because it is carb, it has to have 4 smaller holes to have the same thing as us going to two smaller throttle bodies.
You could not make a single hole plate small enough for the manifold opening on a 4 barrel carb or it would create turbulence and effect performance.
Changing the 4 holes for the 4 throttle opening effectively makes the carb smaller and limiting power.
We have 2 throttle plates and for us to go up or down in size we have to increase or decrease both throttle bodies. They simply have 4 smaller holes instead of 2.

Have you never seen a 4 barrel carb before?

Think of it as the same as valves…..A Z31 engine has 2 valves per cyl. The Z32 has 4 valves per cyl. Both are 3 liters engines. One uses 2 large valves and the other uses 4 smaller valves.
If you have less valves they need to be larger to move the air. If you have 4 small throttle bodies you need to make the opening in each smaller to restrict the flow.
